"White people" do not have culture.Irish people, German people, Scandivian people: yeah, sure, of course they have culture. But "white" is not a culture, it's a social construct that exists primarily for exclusion. CF: people who are now, and previously weren't, considered white (Poles, Italians, some Jews, etc).If whiteness exists only to delineate the in groups/out groups, the only "culture" of whiteness is that of protecting the power of those deemed to be "white".So, yeah, I think "maintaininview on HN →
Literally the paragraph right before the one you quote is this:> I am generally outside the ML field, but I do talk with people in the field. One of the things they tell me is that we don’t really know why transformer models have been so successful, or how to make them better. This is my summary of discussions-over-drinks; take it with many grains of salt. I am certain that People in The Comments will drop a gazillion papers to tell you why this is wrong. As I understand it, this article is basicview on HN →

I wouldn't call it theft, exactly. Presumably work did get done. If I'm reading it right, its just a terrible conflict of interest. The board uses donations to pay companies to work on LibreOffice. That seems totally fine. Some of the board were running/part of companies that rely and work on LibreOffice. That also seems mostly fine? You want your board to represent your community. Then, those same board members directed work towards their companies. That's definitely a conflict of interest, butview on HN →
I'm getting the impression that a lot of people in this thread think this is because they violated an open-source license and saying things to the effect of, "they're just the ones who got caught". I also thought that was the scandal initially. (And when it comes to license violations, yes, there's absolutely more where that came from.)But that's just the cherry on top. I don't think they're being thrown out because they violated a license. There are really serious fraud allegations. Allegedly tview on HN →
Good. It’s time for America to leave Europe to its own fate. We should stop messing with it. Once we stop putting things into Ukraine, Europe can resolve internal matters as they see fit without our interference. If they want to make weapons that’s up to them.view on HN →

That statement pretty clearly shows that they have certain ideological concerns that they value more highly than the kind of stuff we tend to think the EFF primarily cares about (digital privacy, open source, patent trolling, etc).Through that lens, I guess it makes sense that they see TikTok, Instagram, and BlueSky as worth their time and presence but not X.view on HN →
"freedom is intersectional" is a fancy way of saying "I only support freedom for people I agree with." and the impressions line at the end is basically admitting it was never about principles, it was about clout. you didn't leave the platform because of ethics, you left because the algorithm stopped paying you for it.view on HN →
